Old combine wins gold medal for Ireland !

It official, we did it, Ireland's first ever commercial crops of wildflower seeds were harvested today in Ireland.

Following 12 months of talks and trials,

35 years research and species conservation in the field

Design By Nature 'Strikes another gold for Ireland'

It official, we did it, Ireland's first ever commercial crops of wildflower seeds were harvested today and arrived into the drying barns of The Arvum Group's Seedtech and DLF wildflower trials for 6th generation Powers Seeds family, in Waterford.

The family and group have agreed to 3 years trials with our seed expertise and knowledge.

Our fleet of combines will be made available and we are going to share our production to get them up and running. We all have lots to learn and in time compete, yes I have to let go of my monopoly on native wildflowers. .

Julie Power , 6th generation, foresaw 'sustainability' as the way forward for her family business, she started selling our wildflower mixtures online and has developed a great nature friendly website.

Roy Power, her dad, contacted Sandro (tis me) of Design By Nature to teach him the secrets of commercial wildflower crops

Roy is already invested in sustainable crops such as mixed pasture, improved grasses and better arable crops, to name a few.

As soon as we met, I knew Roy could go along way to understanding our problems and help us, even if they are totally 'at seas' with perennial and poly-cultures of wildflowers and some day will most likely push me out of the markets

I also knew the great history of Ireland's most famous seed family, even seedier than I, and as soon as I got to meet the rest of the team, Rudi, Tim, Nigel, Denis and spent to-day harvesting with them, I realised I was among professionals and a beautiful old combine.

i am fully confident they can at least assist us to produce more and better crops even if the y choose not to do it themselves, as hand picked perennial agriculture with few inputs, is not what commercial industry can support unless for PR reasons. They is simply too little profit, even Coillte shut down its native tree nursery which at the time their turnover for that unit was double what ours was. I have seen it far too many times, great idea, but not enough money, but we do it to conserve species and protect Biodiversity, we just need a wage and profits are re-invested into conservation.

You all know me, I have thought just about everybody to grow wildflowers,

I always said the flowers speak for them selves, today they performed admirably offering high clean yields of annuals. They delivered when most needed.

Via the Powers family I can influence the genetic conservation of species at National and Eu level from a route that once resisted our 'political points' at the 1992 single market talks

when I failed to get other countries, wild species banned from being imported into Ireland, .

The EU have changed and now we are to get an exception, I just have to prove it,

I can make a difference with the best in the Irish seed industry behind us.

, and today as I said above, the Irish Seed Industry delivered its first ever wildflower crops, curtsy of misa..

funny how the seed industry and the DAFM, were the first to be involved many years ago, unknown to themselves, as it was so niche way back then,,so' in the smallest office,' in the basement, its was ignored, now it's all gone €.

and the big players, the main players, are the last to get involved.

(at the end of the product cycle)

It's pushing the bandwagon and only jumping on when there's momentum.

Yes, Others did all the hard work, No, we don't expect much reward, it's done for Nature, however we are pressing for serious species conservation and seed origin purity, I will be long gone by the time Ireland wakes up to the realities of serious genetic conservation.

What today's harvest means is our final aim and goal of our 30 year project ' the Cornflower Response' is well up, running and results are now flowing.

Bringing Native provenance Irish sourced collect and grown wildflowers in mass quantities at cheaper prices to the farmer, was always a main aim, where mass plantings will make a difference.

......your support down tru the ages has made us win Gold for Ireland.

Please read 4 ESSENTIAL PAGES

Native Irish provenance flowers can survive your local climatic

conditions and protect local wildlife.

Unlike non-native plants. when you buy native sourced Irish species

they flower at the same time as the wildlife that visits the plants,

Imported wildflowers can bring plant disease and pests to Ireland.

Your purchases also supports jobs in Ireland.
Our products are price competitive with EU. and UK  imports.

Our products cannot be compared to USA imported flora

as they are totally different, if a mix contain larkspur, calendula,

blue lupine, Californian poppy or many others such as flax,

its not a native mix, even if it says wildflower,

they are cultivated forms of wildflowers and not natives.

BEWARE OF BREXIT IMPOSTER POSERS IMPORTING!!!

Even an Irish phone and address does not mean the firm

or the WILDFLOWER SEED OR PLANT stock is Irish.

It MUST SAY: Provenance: Native Irish, Sourced in Ireland.

and Tested by DAFM, NOR SHOULD IT BE A CERTIFIED

AGRI-FORBE as many are cheap CULTIVATED VARIETIES

OF IMPORTED WILDFLOWER 'types and varieties'' called Forbes

and are EU Certified for FOR FARM USE ONLY

Many Irish sellers, are importing flora, that they called wild. it's not.

WHAT WE DO:

We are mainly a mail order business serving
the trade and public with Seed mixtures.
plants and individual species.

We are passionate about wildflowers.

No other business produces Irish provenance native flora

We grow acres of wild sourced seed,

we travel miles to find sources we can collect from,

These small wild seed lots are then propagated

and farm grown as crops

Many of our species are first harvested by hand.
Some crops we can take with combine harvesters,
brush harvesters and our own bespoke methods.

Then the seed-head, chaff and  seed is gathered,
bundled, transported, to our seed house, where its
checked, dried, sorted, straw is removed, chaff is removed,

After winnowing and sieving it's then  stored,
to be mixed and packed, all in Ireland, for Irish growers.

Wildflowers are older than the oldest antiques,

Brighter than the newest novelty
