Regulation of agricultural and horticultural seed
Our nursery stock and crops are inspected when they are growing in summer so that they can
receive an E.U Plant Health Passport. Since 1988 Dr. T Curtis (Wildlife Service) & Dr. D Synnot (Botanical Gardens) are aware of DBN's long-term project for the Conservation & Utilisation of Irish native plants and wildflowers.

Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development REPS and General Information
Land Usage
- The land area of Ireland is 6.9 million hectares, of which almost 5 million hectares is used for agriculture and forestry.
- 80% of the agricultural area is devoted to grass (silage, hay and pasture), 11% to rough grazing and 9% to crop production.
- Beef and milk production currently account for 67% of gross agricultural output.
- Current forest cover amounts to 11% of the agricultural and forestry area, or about 8% of total land area.
What is REPS?
REPS ( Rural Environment Protection Scheme), is a Scheme designed to reward Farmers for carrying our their farming activities in an environmentally friendly manner and to bring about environmental improvement on existing farms.
The objectives of the Scheme are to:
- Establish farming practices and production methods which reflect the increasing concern for conservation, landscape protection and wider environmental problems;
- Protect wildlife habitats and endangered species of flora and fauna;
- Produce quality food in an extensive and environmentally friendly manner.
How does a farmer have a plan prepared?
The Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development have approved a number of Planners to prepare plans. A list of approved Planners is available from local FDS Offices. The farmer may select a planner of his/her choice.
How does a farmer apply to join REPS?
A farmer may apply to join REPS by submitting an application form and accompanying farm plan to the local Farm Development Services Office.
To ensure that your application is dealt with in a speedy manner you should:
- Become fully familiar with the terms and conditions of REPS 2000 before filling out application form
- Complete all forms carefully, accurately and legibly
- Provide accurate and comprehensive information
- Provide all necessary supporting documentation
- Check that all applications are fully complete and signed before submission
- Ensure applications are submitted to arrive in sufficient time i.e. before closing date
- Obtain proof of posting.
