Handing On Our Heritage

Dodder Valley Linear Park

Parks:

Dodder Valley Linear Park

The Dodder Valley Linear Park, is a unique and priceless asset for the people of South Dublin and beyond.

In addition to its natural conservation value, the park offers a rich heritage, outstanding scenery and a sanctuary for peaceful recreation.

The Dodder River provides the focus for the park, which extends from Old Bawn Bridge in Tallaght to Rathfarnham, a distance of 6km. Linking the Dublin Mountains with city suburbia, the park consists of over 100 hectares of fragmented parkland and remnant countryside.

Dodder Valley Park offers city dwellers a unique opportunity to enjoy the natural atmosphere of the countryside without travelling a great distance.

Cherryfield:

The Cherryfield area of Dodder Valley Park takes its name from a country house called Cherrytree House that originally stood on the site.

All that remains today are traces of the stone walls belonging to the house and its gardens.

A weekly paper entitled "The Templeogue Intelligencer" recorded events at the nearby Spa Well and was published at Cherryfield. During 1888 and 1889, Cherryfield was a gathering place for the Sunday Literary Society.

Among the attendants were Katherine Tynan, Maud Gonne and Douglas Hyde. More recently, the house was the birthplace and home of Dave Allen, the well known television comic presenter and a descendent of the Tynan family.

Today, Cherryfield contains excellent wildlife habitats, including a wildflower meadow. Cowslips, which are disappearing in urban areas abound at Cherryfield.
