Flowery Misinformation |
At DBN we regularly hear about other people's unsuitable and costly advice given to our customers on the subject of growing wildflowers. Much of that advice originally came from and is only suited to eastern England
and for UK mixtures of wildflower species that are not native to Ireland. |
Seeds sown into grass? |
The most typical advice to avoid is that 'wildflower seed can be sown into grass'. Only a few flowers can be sown into grass. Beginners should never try to plant seed into grass without killing
off the grass first, use plants instead to fill up a lawn with flowers. |
Soil fertility? |
Another common flowery misnomer is that the 'soil needs to be poor in fertility'. This is not true. If the soil is rich in fertility then you will just have to cut and clear the grass more often & sow MM11.
Wetlands, pasture and tall meadows can be very rich in fertility and have more wildflowers than most other meadows. We also supply mixture EC05 for high fertility wet soils. |

The idea that 'wild flowers do not need cutting is misleading'. Some don't, most will. In Ireland the grass grows so fast it must be cleared away. Where flora is concerned I ask you to study my advice, to make it your
own. If in doubt, contact us. |
