An Irish Wildflower Growers Year |
|
Like Farming, wildflower growing is a way of life. Much of the work is done by hand. Each day is different and challenging to all the DBN team. The wildflower grower's year starts in spring when we start to
propagate our crops. We then plant the gene bank and nursery and sow the field crops with our growers. Spring is a busy time for selling seed so much of our time is spent filling orders. |

|
In May a harvesting team is formed. We start the harvest by checking crops on farms and visiting wild places where we get our source materials to grow on in the nursery and to develop field crops. As our work
is to protect wild flora these are the times we talk to farmers about the value of their weeds, we then collect seed for the Gene Bank. |

By August the commercial field crop harvest is in full swing. The seeds have to be carefully picked over many weeks as they ripen slowly, the seeds are then air dried and stored ready for cleaning over winter,
sadly only a few species can be machine harvested, so a lot of the work is carried out by hand. |

During the winter, when sales are non-existent we clean and pack our seeds and design new products and a catalogue for the Irish market, which I hope you, are enjoying. During winter we attend trade fairs like
Showcase, have our seeds tested and carry out the international marketing of the harvest. We also attend garden festivals and horticultural trade shows where we are delighted to meet our customers. |
