Mulching
|
|
Mulching is a low
maintenance gardening process that takes some time to apply,
but which greatly reduces work in the long term. |
 |
Mulching
is a nature's way to cover the soil (Leaves, Sand, Grass,) are
all mulches. Nature covers the soil with any material to
feed the soil, stop weed invasion, conserve moisture, improve
fertility, moderate soil temperature and provide food to plants and
worms. |
 |
Mulching
uses any garden waste to cover the soil, as long as the material is
weed free. (no hay). Seeds
and plants can be sown on Mulches, both will grow quicker. Sadly
Mulch in not suitable for annuals or vegetables when it has been
freshly laid. Peat is not suitable as it sometimes contains
weeds. |
 |
We
use newspapers and old rotting straw. Level & drain the soil,
(if required) spread the papers overlap by 30cm in Mulching is
a low maintenance gardening process that takes some time to apply,
but which greatly reduces work in the long term. |
 |
We
put old rotting straw on the newspapers and fresh straw over the top.
Spread the old rotting straw over to 10cm on the Mulch.
Plant on top of the straw. Trees and shrubs, any woody
plant can be planted before spreading the newspapers.
Perennials can be planted above the papers. Soon the roots reach down
to the wet paper. |
| "I
will host much more (by 2003) on low on low maintenance gardening
and Mulching when I process 22 years of research, case study,
photographs and experience that I have accumulated. Some or the
research was E.U. funded, one large project was for a Bark Mulch
firm (research on every use in an Irish Garden) but most my own
experience." Sandro
