wildflowers.ie in the Front Garden

Wildflowers for the front garden should be kept and maintained to a high standard.  Formality can be achieved with wildflowers especially when they are placed just off the lawn.  Design By Nature has for over 20 years used to great effect, the following guidelines when designing a front garden:
  1. Greater than 60% of the shrubs and trees planted should be evergreen and "not just conifers" to provide all year interest and give a 'quality foliage' effect.  Use foliage that compliments the property. Try to avoid fussy planting,
  2. All the plants planted in the front garden should only be plants that grow well in your area because if they grow well they will look healthy.  Its not the colour of the flowers, or foliage, but the quality that really counts.  The front garden is your showpiece for the whole year.
  3. Because of the misconception that wildflowers are wild looking, some people may think that this will detract from the property value.  That's why we recommend creating a formal garden interlaced with wildflowers.  Remember grasses, most trees, nearly all herbaceous plants and shrubs, camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas are all native to some country and are in fact wildflowers.
  4. Fact - a weed is only a plant in the wrong place. Weeding is work, and if its relaxation, physical exercise or praise your after, go dig / turn the compost heap, that's what its there for

Features for a front garden include

  • Wildflowers sown into gravel driveways
  • Low growing wildflowers on edges, verges and kerbing
  • Single species groups of wildflowers treated as herbaceous border plants
  • Certain wildflower species grow well when interplanted into shrubs
  • Creeping and climbing wildflowers to enliven hedges and walls
  • Architectural wild flora such as Mullein, Foxglove, Field Scabious, Burdock and Marjoram.

Mini meadow maintenance for front gardens

Mini meadows are most suitable for front gardens as they are regularly cut, floristically rich and well behaved.

It is best to display a sign in your front garden letting people know that this is a wildlife garden, you could even go as far as saying "the gardener is a lazy sod"
or at least doesn't cut the lawn because they choose not to - for wildlife feeding value.
