Woodland Wildflower Seed Mixtures for shaded, semi and dappled - intermittent shaded places

Wildflower mixtures are available for any shaded soil, except very deep shade under conifers and some dense crowned broadleaf trees like beech and sycamore. but as all tree grow tall, eventually enough sunlight gets below the tree to allow germination. if in doubt, if nothing grows under the shade of your trees, neither will our wildflower seed mixtures.

Woodland and shade lovers will not form a meadow, think more a ground flora, introduce shrub and climbers to trap leaves and block the wind, any harsh condition is the true enemy of these tender plant species

Walls, buildings and other features also cause problems, so don't expect a meadow, instead we offer a collection of species that will eventually grow.

Unlike all other wildflower mixtures woodland species CAN tolerate high fertility soils, often associated with ash or alder woodland, however the trees have locked up most nutrients, so in truth the soil may not be as fertile as once way before the trees were planted, flooded wetland is different as new nutrients wash in each year, but as flooded woodland is an important habitat for conservation , we will sort you out

Most Woodland or Shade loving species grow slowly, either over winter and into spring  to flower early, before the leaves come on the trees or it gets too hot.

Grass is the enemy of most shady lovers.

True woodland species are stunning and can form immense blocks of single colour, Bluebells, Red Campion, Foxglove and Bugle.

We Collect and Grow about 20 woodland species (see mixture specification -species lists)

Pre-sowing: NEVER CULTIVATE OR CHANGE SOIL LEVELS AROUND TREES. it will damage and weaken the trees.

As soils are often too root filled to cultivate, clearing weeds before sowing can be problematic, we recommend, strimming away the tough weeds like bramble and ivy, allow the re-growth to form and spray off.

Sowing: Aim to sow in early Spring or early Autumn. Do not sow in mid Summer

Maintenance: Very little ,provide weeds are controlled, no cutting required, but occasional strimming or surface rolling to knock back brambles is required.

Retain leaf litter, dead brash, pruning and dont dump grass clipping in heaps instead spread them about lighty
